A journey through evolution through art and play

Paleonautas is a science-outreach project that invites visitors to explore the major stages of biological evolution through illustrated paper theatres. These small-scale scenes offer a visual and engaging way to discover how life on Earth has changed—from the earliest complex organisms to the age of dinosaurs, the rise of mammals, and the emergence of humans.

The paper theatres were created by artist and illustrator Mar Delmar, in collaboration with researchers from the MAPAS LAB group at the University of Vigo Andrea Serodio and Adriana Oliver. The project brings together artistic creation and scientific knowledge to offer a rigorous yet accessible visual interpretation of key moments in the history of life.

Inspired by nineteenth-century European paper theatres, this project reclaims a historical format as a contemporary tool for science communication. Illustration, visual storytelling, and hands-on assembly help convey complex evolutionary processes in a clear and evocative way for audiences of all ages.

A downloadable educational resource

In this section you can freely download the paper theatres, assemble them, and use them for educational or outreach purposes—whether in schools, cultural institutions, or at home. Their lightweight, modular design turns paleobiology into a creative, participatory, and approachable experience.
